![]() Lectures were delivered on educational, social and political topics with Aveling himself in the chair and participation from the floor encouraged. However, he did provide his staff with recreational facilities with a lecture room and mess room. Īveling had a reputation as something of a martinet in business, only keeping on the best men. Thomas Aveling is regarded as "the father of the traction engine". Aveling later invented the steamroller in 1867. The alteration was made by fitting a long driving chain between the crankshaft and the rear axle. In 1859, Aveling invented the traction engine when he modified a Clayton & Shuttleworth portable engine, which had to be hauled from job to job by horses, into a self-propelled one. The business also included a drainage tile works. In 1851 he was recorded as a farmer and grazier employing 16 men and 6 boys. Aveling married Edward's niece, Sarah Lake (daughter of Robert Lake of Milton-Chapel near Canterbury) and in 1850 took a farm at Ruckinge on Romney Marsh. Aveling was apprenticed to Edward Lake, a farmer, of Hoo. Thomas' stepfather brought him up with "a Bible in one hand and a birch rod in the other". His mother was widowed while Aveling was still young and the family settled in Hoo ( Rochester, Kent). Thomas Aveling was born 11 September 1824 at Elm, Cambridgeshire. The company used a rampant horse as its logo derived from the White Horse of Kent. By the early 1900s, the company had become the largest manufacturer of steamrollers (road rollers) in the world. Thomas Aveling and Richard Thomas Porter entered into partnership in 1862, and developed a steam engine three years later in 1865. So Fergus will explain the rules like Bradford did, and I really do enjoy him mostly for that sing-along song of his, "There Once was an Engine Who Ran Away", its very catchy, especially if you like jazz music, even though the episode, Fergus Breaks the Rules, wasn't a really good episode, because seriously, what rules did Fergus even break? Plus, I've had enough American engines being on Sodor too, like seriously, I am! But yeah, Fergus will certainly appear, and will have some development, even though I admit, the "do it right" motto he had was little bit annoying, and Bradford, another neat freak character was written better when personally explaining the rules, and if they did bring Fergus back in the current series, I wouldn't be surprised if these became friends. I guess we got Timothy who is sorta like Fergus, but I'm more used to him, he has a decent personality, but he's not one of my favorite characters, I'm more used to him really, that doesn't mean I dislike Timothy. and he'll be in my series alright, and just as neat-freakish like he was in Season 7, though it was still too bad his model got damaged during the filming of Bill, Ben and Fergus, and its been like, what, 15 years since we've seen him. Artist's Commentary: I actually changed my mind again, as here we have Fergus, he's not a character I usually think of a lot, but I like him. Despite this, he is a very well-meaning and a very friendly engine that can still offer positive advice, and is always willing to help the other engines when their in trouble, and even helping them do things right when confused on how to do so. He cannot stand any nonsense from the likes of cheeky tank engines, arrogant tender engines, or even devious diesels. He is proud of running the cement works and even the China Clay Works on Edward's Branch line, and can always prefers to have everything running like clockwork. But his persnickety and obedient demeanor can get on the other engines nerves. He knows the whole rule book by heart, and is always insisting the other engines "do it right".
